Calling all balcony and apartment gardeners

October 6th, 2008, 7:55 am · 5 Comments · posted by Cindy McNatt

I can’t help but take a peek at Life on the Balcony occasionally to see what’s up with gardeners who ain’t got no dirt. Course it gets me wondering how many people garden on balconies in the OC and what do their tiny gardens look like?

If you garden on a balcony or other ridiculously small space send photos to cmcnatt@ocregister.com. I’m thinking your gardens would make a fun, full feature story in our paper.

In the meantime, here’s a tiny garden from the magazine Apartment Therapy that I could be completely happy with if it were mine. Tomato anyone? Click to enlarge.

Oooh, I can’t wait to see the article! I’d love to see what other people are doing in their small spaces.

    Thanks for the mention Cindy!

Hey, also…if I get some pics I’d like to interview you for the story. Can you email me with your contact info?

I would love to see that story. I have lots of deck space with my third story condo, but way too much sun - I’m not sure how to garden here, so help please!
In a little aside too - in our HOA of condos we’d had to replace too many decks due to gardners placing pots directly on the wooden deck surface and wetting the deck repeatedly, and over 20 years or so the decks have given out. Just walking around the streets you can look at the underside of many decks and see the water staining. If you can address that aspect of deck gardening, it would really be helpful to the responsible condo/apartment owner.

Thank you for publishing the links! I have bookmarked them to show to my boyfriend, an avid gardener, who has done amazing things with potted plants and vegetables. This past summer, we enjoyed the juiciest hand-picked tomatoes and fragrant fresh basil just about every night when we dined on our limited-space, second floor deck. How do I send photos to you?

Send me jpeg attachments, 300 dpi to cmcnatt@ocregister.com. Thanks!
